Tantra

“The thing about all this is that there is no puzzle, no problem, and really no `mystery`. All problems are resolved and everything is clear, simply because what matters is clear. The rock, all matter, all life, is charged with dharmakaya... everything is emptiness and everything is compassion” (Thomas Merton, The Asian Journal). 

The Tantra performance was a reference to the Buddhist tradition of spiritual development based on a philosophy that assumes that there is no duality and all that exists is a manifestation of the existence and form of pure consciousness. Tibetan Buddhism recognizes the unity of consciousness and nothingness. The word “tantra” (of Sanskrit origin) literally means “a tool for expanding consciousness.” The artistic measures which I used in my visual and sound story were very simple: the shadows of the hands gestures and the shadows of a few items on a big semi-transparent screen which both separated me from and connected me with the audience. The lighting I designed allowed me to differentiate between the layers of every shade and to fill them with colour. The screen in Tantra, as in my other performances, was not a substitute for the image, but the image itself. This is consistent with the tradition of the shadow theatre which foreshadowed the cinema and where thinking in terms of images is very important. My Tantra spoke about the transparency rather than the opacity of life. The performance was motivated by an emotional solidarity with Tibet at a time when China intensified the persecution of Buddhist monks and inhabitants of Lhasa, defenders of the autonomy and culture of Tibet. However, it was not conceived as a political intervention; the essence of the performance was that it was present and ephemeral in its most literal and Buddhist sense.

Tantra

Tantra, 2008, performance, kilka osobistych przedmiotów, dzwonki tybetańskie, motto z Tomasza Mertona, nagranie dźwiękowe (trans-motif-remix Tomasza Marciniaka), papierowy ekran (3 x 4 m), szklanka wody, światło LED. „Chodzi o to, że w tym wszystkim nie ma żadnej zagadki, żadnej «tajemnicy». Wszystkie problemy są rozwiązane i wszystko jest jasne, po prostu dlatego, że to, co ma znaczenie, jest jasne. Skała, wszelka materia, wszelkie życie jest naładowane dharmakają... wszystko jest pustką i wszystko jest współczuciem” (Tomasz Merton, Dziennik azjatycki). 

Performance Tantra był nawiązaniem do buddyjskiej tradycji duchowego rozwoju opartej na filozofii, która zakłada, że nie ma dualizmu i wszystko, co istnieje, jest manifestacją jednego bytu i formy czystej świadomości. Buddyzm tybetański uznaje jedność świadomości i nicości. Słowo tantra (pochodzenie sanskryckie) dosłownie znaczy „narzędzie służące do rozciągania świadomości”. Środki, których użyłem w mojej wizualnodźwiękowej opowieści, były bardzo proste: cienie gestów dłoni i kilku przedmiotów na półprzeźroczystym ekranie, który oddzielał mnie od publiczności i jednocześnie łączył z nią. Własnej konstrukcji oświetlenie pozwalało mi rozwarstwiać każdy cień i wypełniać go kolorem. Ekran w Tantrze, jak w innych moich działaniach, nie stanowił substytutu obrazu, lecz obraz. Jest to zgodne z tradycją teatru cieni, który antycypował kino, i w którym myślenie obrazem ma wielkie znaczenie. Moja Tantra była opowieścią raczej o przeźroczystości niż nieprzeźroczystości życia. Performance został zainicjowany przez poczucie solidarności z Tybetem w chwili, kiedy Chiny zaostrzyły represje wobec broniących autonomii i kultury Tybetu mnichów buddyjskich i mieszkańców Lhasy. Ale nie miał charakteru interwencji politycznej. Był aktualny i efemeryczny w najbardziej dosłownym i bliskim buddyzmowi znaczeniu.
